Research interests
I am a Professor of Astrophysics at the Institute for Astronomy within the University of Edinburgh, based at the Royal Observatory.
I currently hold a European Research Council Consolidator Grant Fellowship.
My research focusses on cosmology, specifically making detailed observations of the Dark Universe. I co-lead the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Lensing Survey (CFHTLenS) and the ESO the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS).
Teaching
I am the Course Organiser of a new pre-honours Introductory Astrophysics course. In this applied physics course we use innovative teaching practises based on the "flipped classroom" approach. The majority of the course content is distributed via our coursebook and tested through weekly online quizzes. The lecture contact time is then reserved to develop our students understanding. We place strong emphasis on the benefits of peer learning and we develop our students problem solving skills in weekly teaching studio workshops.
